The latest figures for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) up to the end of August have been published by DESNZ.

Up until the end of August 2026, there were 151,136 voucher applications received. The majority of these were for grants towards AWHP installations (98 per cent) and a total of 101,029 vouchers issued.

The total number of applications in August 2026 across all technology types (7,486) was 8 per cent lower than the previous month (July 2026: 8,150).

In context, this fall is in part due to the prior month having the highest number of applications since the scheme started, pushed by the launch of the new £9,000 off-gas-grid uplift for homes replacing oil or LPG boilers. Year on year, August 2026 is 120 per cent higher than the same month of the previous year.

August also saw the highest number of vouchers issued in a month with a total of 125,321 vouchers issued, 40 per cent higher than the previous month and 103 per cent higher than the same month in the previous year.

The month was also saw the highest number of redemption applications in a month since the scheme started. Of the total 93,364 installations with BUS redemptions paid up to the end of August 2026, the largest proportion (55 per cent) replaced gas systems, followed by oil (17 per cent) and then properties which did not previously have a heating system at all (13 per cent).

DESNZ reported that the nominal median cost of an AWHP and GSHP in the most recent quarter was £12,908 and £27,232, respectively (including the grant value). After adjusting for inflation, the median cost of an AWHP is now 11 per cent lower than the same period in the first full year of the scheme (2023), although the differing sizes of pumps was not accounted for.
