States sue over Trump’s EPA shake up

Over twenty states have combined forces to object to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) power plant rule that removed emissions limits.

Brought in by Biden, the rules were designed to cap climate pollution from power plants, but the Trump administration, in its partial return to coal, scrapped the measures.

Now the states are suing the EPA, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, arguing that dismantling the rules will result in removing one of the US’s most significant climate protections, worsening the climate crisis.

The EPA, meanwhile, maintains that discarding the rules will save more than $300bn.

Th states involved are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
