In a speech to the Wild Summit, Green Party leader Zack Polanski highlighted the threats that the UK faces from climate change.

Calling for the Prime Minister to “tell the truth”, he said that the Government should start by releasing a full unredacted report from the Joint Intelligence Committee on the threats this country faces from ecosystem collapse.

Polanski said: “We’ve already seen how fragile our food systems are this year, with farmers warning that we could see empty shelves as a result of drought and flooding, and the Government whispering that we should start stocking up on tinned food and bottled water. And these buried reports lay bare how unprepared we are for what is coming.”

Releasing such a report is unlikely to make any difference to the UKK’s decarbonisation, but it might push governments to consider better mitigation and effect responses to issues such as food shortage, and indeed social disorder should supplies fail.

The Green Party is also opposing opening of the Jackdaw gas field, calling it an “act of climate vandalism” in an open letter.

Saying that it will not reduce energy costs, increase energy sovereignty or protect jobs, the letter goes on to say that the Government must “ensure that the existing tax instruments, like the windfall tax, actually bring in the revenue that was promised, and end the subsidies that multinational oil and gas companies have received at UK taxpayers’ expense.”

BP announced recently announced that it will sell its North Sea oil and gas assets, citing the country's heavy tax environment.
