More than 120 IPCC authors are meeting in Mexico City to advance the first draft of its report on carbon removal technologies, is scheduled for release in 2027.

The 2027 Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CDR-CCUS) report is being prepared by the IPCC’s Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI). The meeting in Mexico follows the authors’ first gathering in Rome, Italy, in April 2026, where they began preparing the draft.

The report is intended to support governments in estimating and transparently reporting carbon dioxide emissions and removals associated with CDR and CCUS activities in their national greenhouse gas inventories.

The 2027 CDR-CCUS Methodology Report will cover a broad range of technologies and approaches, including direct air capture, soil- and biomass-based removals, coastal ecosystem approaches, carbon capture, utilisation and long-term storage, and the production of durable carbon-derived materials.

The conclusions of the report are likely to help shape CCUS policy and funding, including the UK’s commitment to the technologies.
