Transport for London is seeking £1bn from several major carmakers over historic diesel emissions. Tfl alleges that cars entered its ULEZ zone without paying the levy, affecting pollution-control efforts, and revenue.

Stellantis, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, and Nissan are all in the dock, as the transport authority alleges fraud and negligence over the use of data.

First reported in the Financial Times, the case is parallel to the notorious ‘defeat devices’ of a few years back. As yet the carmakers have not presented a defence.
