A new deal has been launched to ensure Wales meets its renewable energy targets.
The Renewable Energy Sector Deal has been published as the latest Energy Generation and Energy Use in Wales report, showing renewable electricity generation in Wales in 2024 was equivalent to 54 per cent of its electricity consumption.
The deal, also known as Cymru Clean Power, is a long‑term commitment between Welsh Government and industry to work together to accelerate renewable energy projects while maximising benefits for communities. It covers onshore and offshore wind, solar and tidal, alongside action to strengthen local supply chains and build the workforce Wales needs for the future.
The target is for renewable electricity generation to meet 70 per cent of consumption by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035, whilst also delivering at least 1.5GW of locally owned renewable energy capacity by 2035.
Rebecca Evans, the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, will launch the Sector Deal on a visit to the Morlais tidal energy project, in Anglesey. Owned by social enterprise Menter Môn, the Morlais scheme, in which the Welsh Government has an £8m equity stake, will become the largest consented tidal energy project in Europe.
Renewable UK Cymru commented: “We’re delighted to have supported this landmark sector deal, bringing government, industry and communities together to accelerate renewables and reduce reliance on volatile gas and imported fossil fuels. We’re committed to ensuring this momentum is carried forward by the next government, and we encourage all political parties to maintain, and strengthen, support for renewable energy beyond the next election.”
