A private jet may not be everyone first though of a green investment, but then again we are talking about the EU’s green taxonomy.
So, private jets are a green, after the second-highest court in the EU rules on the matter in a dispute between the bloc and French Dassault Aviation.
Private jets had been singled out as being disqualified from being an environmentally sustainable activity, but the EU General Court overturned this, finding the carbon footprint of the aircraft was created in their operation, not in manufacture.
It also pointed out that their direct routes could reduce footprint as could use of sustainable aviation fuel.
Private jets are thus, in the “transitional” category of hard-to-abate, that might offer a realistic path to decarbonisation in the future.
The appeal opens up other potential claims in aviation, and possibly other areas, and will keep the lawyers busy.
