Government considers bill discounts for heat pumps

The Government is considering reducing electricity bills if a heat pump has been installed in the latest attempt to progress net-zero targets.

The Financial Times reports that households with heat pumps could be exempt from green levies, but such a proposal would inevitably lead to issues of inequality and could prove unpopular to a public that is already disenchanted.

In addition, it is another potential cost when the Chancellor is seeking to try and cut public expenditure in her spending review and raise revenue. If the measure is seen to effectively be a levy on gas, the political ramifications could be brutal.
