The Secretary of State has grated development consent for the 100-130MW Frodsham Solar project in Cheshire.
Comprising of ground mounted solar photovoltaic arrays and an on-site substation, together with an associated battery energy storage system (BESS) and supporting infrastructure including a connection to the national grid at Frodsham Substation, the project will also feature landscaping, biodiversity measures, and new permissive paths.
Cheshire West and Chester Council are targeting to install 300MW of solar generation capacity by 2025, and 800MW by 2050. Construction on this project should start next year, with an in-service date of 2029.
Due to the amount of power that Frodsham Solar could generate (more than 50MW) the project is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP)and as such requires approval from the Secretary of State.
The developer of the site, Cubico Sustainable Investments, is one of the world’s largest privately-owned renewable energy companies, with an installed capacity of nearly 3GW across 12 countries in Europe, the Americas and Australia, with a further 3GW in construction and development.
