Ofgem has granted a licence for Tesla to be a domestic and business energy supplier in the UK.
Tesla subsidiary Tesla Energy Ventures underwent a seven-month assessment by the energy regulator, but it now seems certain that Tesla Energy will be available to UK buyers, allowing supply, storage (via Tesla’s Powerwall) and EVs to be integrated.
Musk has a record of creating integrated technologies, such as combining SpaceX and Starlink, or his plans to make an omni-digital service from X.
However, it has taken Tesla six years from its initial electricity generation licence in 2020 to ramp up its offering into the retail market.
Tesla will only be supplying electricity and therefore will be a mono rather than dual-fuel supplier, which you might think would endear Musk to the Energy Secretary, who has previously said Musk should “get the hell out of UK politics and our country”.
With the high volume of Tesla EVs in the UK, there is a considerable base from which to build, but it is a highly competitive market, that has seen casualties such as Bulb and will pit Tesla against well-established giants such as Octopus.
