When Ferrari went green

Ferrari has joined the EV ranks with its first fully electric car.

The Luce, designed with input from former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive marks a radical departure from the sleek classics one might associate with the Italian brand. From the company that produced the 250, the 206 and the 308, you could hardly find a more different design. Indeed, it pretty much looks like pretty much every other EV on the road.

Some will like it no doubt, as some (very limited number of people) like the new Jaguar look or the remark of Ghostbusters, but overall, the response has been negative, with Ferrari shares falling over 8 per cent on the unveiling.

Performance is brisk, however, and marks a parting of the ways between the ‘soul’ of a car and the driving experience against the need to adapt to an increasingly clean and electric world. Whether this is the solution to combine the two is keeping the jury out for now.

The launch comes at an interesting time as many major Western manufacturers are scaling back EV production and focussing on ICE cars. It also comes amid a sales slump for many luxury items (the Luce retails for over £400,000).
