Ed Miliband is to make planning permission easier for fusion projects.

Reports in The Telegraph point to DESNZ shaking up planning in order to make fusion reactors easier to develop. By including the reactors in the national infrastructure planning system, developments can bypass local authorities and consultation.

Part of the justification is that they could be an important party of energy security and getting to net-zero, but the fact they will produce very little waste is a major factor in their favour. The UK is a leading player in the race, but the concept sill remains a gamble, and any operational reactor is decades away.
