Reform UK will scrap VAT and green levies on household energy bills if they form the next government.
Citing the high energy costs in the UK and energy security, Reform has said that expanding domestic energy production and scrapping “policies that drive bills higher while making Britain more dependent on foreign energy” will be enacted, including the Renewables Obligation levy and Carbon Price Support.
The current conflict in the Middle East has placed energy security and cost at the centre of politics, and no one would deny that Reform is quick off the mark to seize topic issues.
Whilst some levies are due to be removed or at least transferred over to general taxation, as the Government seeks to centralise expenditure to progressive tax.
Reform launched the ‘net-zero critical’ policies in a typically discrete manner on its Facebook page with a lottery-style competition and prize to pay one year of electricity and heating bills for a street or community.
Jess Ralston, head of energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) rebuffed the policies saying that “Any government that rips up these contracts could damage investor confidence, not just in the renewables sector but across the economy, which could in turn slow down the UK's ailing growth."
