Another new record for wind

The National Energy System Operator (Neso) has said new wind record has been set, with 23GW produced on 11 November, beating the previous high for wind power generation of 22GW set on 18 December last year.

Windpower of all types was, at that point, providing 43.6 per cent of electricity, with 12.1 per cent from ‘embedded wind’, locally provided power rather than via high-voltage transmission.

Commenting on record RenewableUK’s deputy chief executive Jane Cooper said: “On a cold, dark November evening, wind was generating enough electricity to power 80 per cent of British homes when we needed it most. This new record high period is another tangible example of wind taking its place at the heart of our clean energy system, as we transition away from the volatile prices of fossil fuels which caused the energy crisis.”

At the time of the record, gas accounted for 12.5 per cent of generation, with 12.1 per cent from embedded wind, 11.3 per cent from interconnector flows, 8 per cent from nuclear, 8 per cent from biomass, 1.4 per cent from hydro and 1.1 per cent from storage
